Chapter 9

“Good morning.” Jamie cuffed Grant’s shoulder.

“Morning.” Grant made an exaggerated point of searching Jamie’s face. “No black eyes, I see. You must have managed to stay out of trouble last night. Unlike Monday night.”

“Ha.” Jamie filled his response with droll sarcasm and joined Grant looking through the fence rails of the pens at some calves.

“What are you doing down here in the stock pens?”

“I want to talk to Cameron. Apologize for what happened on Monday evening.” Jamie planned to make amends with Cameron. No more putting it off.

“Remember you have no control over his forgiveness over both incidents. Did you apologize to Donna?”

Jamie’s smile widened. “I tried to. She actually acted angry I’d consider apologizing for my roguish behavior.”

Grant wiggled his bushy eyebrows. “That is good news. Has she forgiven you for your past indiscretions? Helped you complete your sobriety step?”

“No.” Jamie rubbed his chin. “I think she will. We held hands today.”

“No wonder your smile is ear to ear and you’re ready to do something dumb. Love’s bravado is coursing through your veins so you want to confront Cameron. You think you’re ten feet tall and bulletproof.”

Jamie shrugged. “Maybe. Or maybe it’s time to clear the air.”

“Suit yourself.” Grant waved his hand toward the pen holding the bucking horses. “There he is.”

Jamie felt Grant’s eyes following him as he zigzagged around the metal fencing panels and headed toward Cameron. Thankfully, no other stockmen were around. They could have a private conversation.

The hard look Cameron shot Jamie stopped him in his tracks and gave him momentary pause. Jamie closed his eyes. Give me strength, Lord, to handle this difficult situation with diplomacy. Amen.

Jamie drew a deep breath, squared his shoulders, and walked over to Cameron. “Look, we need to talk.”

Cameron continued to inspect the flank of a quarter horse.

“We’ve needed to talk for a long time,” Jamie added.

Cameron lifted his head, his brown eyes dull with loathing and distrust. Jamie swallowed hard. It was difficult to believe they were once colleagues and friends. And almost brothers-in-law.

“At least hear me out.” Jamie took the slight twitch of Cameron’s left eyebrow as an invitation to contin-ue. “I am sorry about the truck accident twenty years ago. I know losing that bull devastated your family and set back your business. It was your company’s first chance to have an animal involved at the National Finals.”

Jamie paused in case Cameron wanted to accept his apology. After a moment of silence, Jamie continued. “I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me. I thank God every day no one else was killed due to my negli-gence.”

Cameron’s snort echoed through the animal pens. “What you are is lucky my father didn’t press charges.”

“I am grateful. I didn’t act like it then when he fired me, but I was grateful.” Jamie rubbed his chin with his thumb and index finger. Was it a good sign Cameron was talking? “Honestly, I don’t remember much about that night. I never have. Donna and I had an argument, which is why she didn’t go out with us after the rodeo.
